The left-wing American historian and sociologist Mike Davis has identified the current crisis as the perfect opportunity to single out large pharmaceutical companies as scapegoats for the pandemic. Their power, he claims, must finally be broken. And he goes further: More is needed than just a second “New Deal,” this is the moment for “social ownership and the democratization of economic power.”
